Cerebrolysin is a complex mixture whose biological activity resembles that of neurotrophic factors. Its low-molecular-weight peptide fractions cross the blood-brain barrier and mimic the effects of BDNF, NGF, CNTF, and IGF-1 in neural tissue. Mechanisms include: (1) Neurotrophic — promotes neuronal survival, differentiation, and axonal growth; reduces excitotoxic damage from glutamate.
